are you for SCUBA?
I was requested to post a photo in my newly purchased wet suit.

Now, the text book says wet suits are supposed to fit snugly in order to reduce water recirculation and keep you warm.

As I peeled the suit on and peeled the suit off, I decided I knew the REAL reason...

To look slim!

[No problem with that, of course]

Open Water SCUBA Class starts a week from today. YAY!

Made these photos last night as the sun was going down. I don't think I've ever seen a sky with this much going on in it at one time.

Amazon.com and I...
...have parted ways.

After requesting my account be closed, I got an "apology" email from their customer service representative with an explanation of the same policy about not being able to ship to APO (which I had already read on their web site, thank you very much) and then found myself having to go through several email tag sessions to get to a point where I could confirm the confirmatory confirmation that I was sure I wanted to confirm my certainty that I wanted to close my Amazon account.

So I've closed my Amazon account.

I'm just waiting for confirmation.

*snicker*

Bottom line: If a company can't support my consumer needs or at least make an effort to do so, I don't need to support them as a consumer. I wish I could have taken this same position with HP and Dell (who also cannot seem to ship to APO) but I was already in their product line, so with them I'll have to make the exception).

4th of July
We spent the late afternoon and evening down at the 4th of July festival - there were static displays of aircraft, lots of carnival-style food (barbecue, burgers, hot dogs, chick-on-a-stick, drinks, funnel cakes, etc.) and we got to see Eve 6 play - this was Collin's first real "official rock concert" and he was rocking out with a few favorite tunes.

For folks who aren't familiar with Eve 6 by name, I recommend the following songs:

Here's to the Night
Promise
Rescue

Collin fell asleep on the bus ride back from the festival area; he awoke just long enough to go in the house, brush his teeth, and crash again [considering he usually goes to be by 8:15 or so and we didn't get back home until 9:30, he did just fine and was definitely digging the concert, so we had a good time].

Amazon.com
It appears that more than half the items I'd consider ordering from Amazon.com can't be shipped to an APO address.

It makes me think it's time to close my Amazon.com account.

No sense keeping a business or consumer relationship with a company that can't support my customer needs.

Get Smart [no spoilers]
Totally stupid.

Totally funny.

I'm ashamed that I laughed. But it was still funny after all these years [I was a fan of the original TV series] and re-envisioning was just as much fun.

Even Kelly was laughing her ass off.

i'd welcome some assistance...
I have some Zune points left on my account and I'd interested to hear some suggestions for artists/songs.

The intent is to build a collection I can enjoy but which will also be useful at work for patients to enjoy while I'm reating them.

So, any suggestions?

[Note: I reserve the right to say "no thanks" or tell you it's not appropriate, so don't take offense if I do]

Arrived at work as usual, expecting/planning to cover the exam rooms for the first 90 minutes, since the exam doc was busy with some change of command tasks.

Fine.

Made it clear that after that I would be covering the root canal room and they'd need to find an alternative person to cover exams.

This was, of course, not planned ahead of time, so they came looking for me.

They were surprised when I said "NO."

I then discovered a provider (who I happen to supervise) made a treatment plan for a night guard on a patient, who was placed on my book. I've briefed all the providers on several occasions on my expectations for patients scheduled on my book, including a REASON why they're being planned to have a night guard. I proceeded to take the record to the dentist, put it on her desk, and inform her that she would be seeing the patient, since she did not indicate in the record WHY the patient needed a night guard.

She took offense to my bluntness and so I apologised to her, but made it clear (once again) my expectations.

I then sent ANOTHER email to all the other dentists explaining that from now on, if patients are scheduled on my book for night guards or joint pain without a reason for the referral, I will return the chart to them and let them manage the patients themselves. I simply have too many other tasks to complete to play guess work for the other providers.

Finished a root canal and managed to get out for lunch 15 minutes early.

On the way to my office, the acting commander asked me to handle a task related to a review of a provider's charts over the last year, as well as a review of our Code Blue (medical emergency) operating instructions.

So I ate my lunch in 5 minutes and got to those tasks.

In time to start my afternoon patients.

And cover the exams for my team.

And get paged by 3 different people to cover exams for the dentist who was supposed to be back at 9:30am.

They were surprised... again... when I said "NO" and suggested they find another provider to cover their exams [there are often other dentists sitting in their offices snacking while some of us run around the clinic all day long].

I was also supposed to volunteer for an upcoming air show (I was one of the first people to volunteer) and was under the expectation I was to work the command tent; I was informed through a group-wide email today that the command tent was being run by someone else and that there were no open spots for the shift I had signed up for - but there was a shift open for late Saturday night. I more or less told them "Thanks but no thanks, I already have plans," and suggested in the future that they clarify and communicate with people who volunteer instead of making them feel like they're being blown off. They were surprised when they offered me the late shift that I said "NO." [recurring theme today]

I made my concerns on these items known to the acting commander.

I finished my patients by 3:45, attended a weekend safety briefing (4-day weekend) and then attended a meeting of the emergency response committee (the committee that handles the aforementioned Code Blue procedures).

Stopped by the commander's secretary before leaving, chatted a few, shared some music with her on the Zune, and then headed home.

I...

am tired.

*thud*

I'm looking forward to meeting the new commander when he arrives. I'll have an opportunity to share some concerns (and the acting commander asked me to do so and seemed glad that I was coming forward with some of this).

I'm racking up favors, to be sure.

I think I'm going to start collecting on a few.

Plans for the evening/tomorrow:

- Turn off the alarm clock [done]
- Watch some Season 1 and 2 Babylon 5 [in progress]
- Go to clinic for a day of peace and quiet and some studies I've put off (clinic is closed tomorrow)
- Go for an afternoon or early evening swim with Collin (he's in swim lessons)
- Dom whatever the heck else I feel inspired to do (or not do)

The summer crunch continued today.

Two root canals (finished one, started another).
Scheduled patient for 2 fillings, found a third cavity in the process, did 3 fillings.
Ran 15 minutes into the next appointment.
Delivered a night guard.
Ran 11 minutes into the next appointment.
Redid a filling done by another dentist just a week prior.
Ran 9 minutes into the next appointment.
Checked a patient on whom I had to remove a tooth after doing a root canal a week before. Patient was doing fine.

Did the usual administrative work and got out of clinic before 5pm (which is an accomplishment).

I never got to my professional studies last night - I was out like a light by 7:45pm.

I suspect this evening will be the same.

Fortunately, I have off on Thursday and Friday (4-day holiday weekend). I'll finish my professional studies essay and order my test probably on Saturday and then study for my SCUBA test on Sunday after brunch.

I'll still be busy tomorrow covering exams for one of the dentists for the first 90 minutes, delivering a retainer, doing another root canal, then an afternoon filled with short overlapping appointments (plus exams, so I suspect I'll be running behind).

Then I have an after duty hours meeting to cover Emergency Medical Services/Crash Carts, and such.

Then probably some administrative work.

Good news:

I finished the newcomers' notebooks and handed those off to the incoming dentists' sponsors (one less thing on my desk).

Really enjoying the Zune at work. Patients are enjoying rocking out, and our entire hallway (myself and one other dentist) rock out to my tunes. I even got a remote control, so I can change songs and volume from my office (my office and treatment room are directly across from each other, so I have direct line of sight on my Zune from my office desk).

Bad (sort of) news:

Working a big air show/festival on the 4th. In uniform. In the heat. Expecting to sweat profusely.

Good news from the bad news:

Eve 6 is playing the air show, with fireworks to follow. I'm hoping they play "Rescue" and "Here's to the Night".

We shall see!

2 root canals.
1 crown preparation.
Covered my own exam book.
Covered the exam book for one of the dentists (who was on leave).
Prepared reports for tomorrow's professional staff meeting.

At one point, I had 3 patients all in the clinic at the same time, plus 2 exam rooms to cover.

It was a productive day, and I got everything done, but I'm tired.

And I still have to work on a 500-word essay for professional development, and start studying for my SCUBA certification in 2 weeks.

Oy!
